When I first grew to become familiar with the idea of the yankee philoso pher Josiah Royce, elements really intrigued me. the 1st was once Royce's declare that the concept of group was once his major metaphysical guideline; the second one was once his shut organization with the 2 American pragmatists, Charles Sanders Peirce and William James. in regards to the first issue, i used to be struck by way of the truth that a thinker who died in 1916 may still emphasize an issue of such modern importance not just in philosophy yet in such a lot of different very important fields besides (sociology, psychology, politics, theology - to call just a few). in regards to the moment, i used to be curious as to if the pragmatism of Peirce and James may have motivated Royce throughout the process their specialist and private contacts. equally, I puzzled even if the idealism of Royce may need affected the idea of Peirce and James. To have appeased my interest in regard to all 3 thinkers, even if, might have required (at least) 3 books. As a commence i've got now appeased it in regard to at least one. In gaining knowledge of the writings of Royce i discovered my solution to the Houghton Library and to the data of Harvard college at Cambridge, Massa chusetts, the place the unpublished manuscripts of Royce are preserved. (No enhancing activity has but been performed in this bulk of fabric, even though such will surely be a welcome contribution to American philosophy.

HIS NOTION OF THE ABSOLUTE 47 attitude would be inconsistent. Instead, realizing the inevitable relativity of every belief to the particular consciousness and particular moment in which it is believed, he discusses several possible tests of faith,17 The first, the test of persistence, is a purely psychological means of judging the sincerity and intensity of a belief; it cannot say anything of the truth status of the content asserted in belief. On the other hand, the test of consistency, while theoretically adequate, is practically limited by the fact that all we are finally doing in examining a belief for consistency is to compare it with other beliefs.

Peirce realized that the two meanings were as far apart as the two poles if taken in a Kantian context. Accordingly, he chose the term pragmatism in order to indicate the essentially empirical flavor of his doctrine. 21 Had Peirce been sure that "practicalism" would be interpreted in a non-Kantian, experiential context, he might have followed the counsel of his friends. In any event, given the variety of interpreters who succeeded him, Peirce's effort to preserve precision in understanding the term would probably have failed no matter what label he selected.

My belief, whatever it is, forms itself in me. 1 look on. My will has nothing to do with the matter.... "1 Since Royce had much admired some of his friend's beliefs, he was so disappointed that he refused to be held responsible for them. Furthermore, he rejected the friend's refusal: "Despite his disclaimer, I thought, and yet 1 FE,345. 44 THE EARLY ROYCE think, that he has made his beliefs very much for himself, and that these beliefs do him honor....
