This evolution occurred as publishers started viewing the new format in a different light. Reprinting newspaper strips in cheaply manufactured magazines was essentially an easy means for syndicates to cash in on previously used material. Yet Major Wheeler-Nicholson’s initiative to publish original strips had demonstrated that the reliance on new comic-strip material was a promising option for a comic magazine. In fact, the contents of Wheeler-Nicholson’s National Allied Publishing magazines were as heterogeneous as those of Eastern Color’s Famous Funnies, simply because the first comic magazines were designed so as to resemble Sunday supplements, of which they were mere offshoots in the first place.

Whether this empirical market study took place or not is secondary. What is important is that by charging ten cents, Gaines put comic books in competition with the “Big Little Books” (BLBs), the small black-and-white volumes with color paper covers that had been published by Whitman since 1932. BLBs contained up to 424 pages alternating text and full-page illustrations, which were in fact enlarged, wordless comic panels. Primarily destined to a juvenile audience, BLBs offered all sorts of stories, many of which starred comics characters.

But regarding these artifacts as ancestors of comics presupposes an aesthetic and historical determinism that is difficult to defend: it is based on the premise that comics, a means of expression appearing in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is the inevitable and/or final stage of a process in which hieroglyphs, the Trajan column, and the like were mere precursors. This is not to deny the possibility that there is a connection between the various elements of the preceding list and that there was an evolution of the various media that make it possible to tell stories in images.
